As with our preschool and elementary programs, OLQP provides an all encompassing-spiritual, academic, cultural, and physical-quality education for our Junior High students. OLQP Junior High includes grades 6th – 8th.
Our Jr. High curriculum comes from the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, which is also based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills that the public schools follow. We strive to teach our students at a more advanced level, allowing for individual differences, and not accepting mediocrity. Our curriculum gives our students the skills to develop not only academically, but spiritually and socially as well.
We feel our students are held at a higher accountability and responsibility level. Our smaller class size permits students to develop a more personal relationship with the staff and volunteers at OLQP. Smaller class size also allows for everyone to have the opportunity to take on leadership roles. They are given leadership opportunities on a daily basis as mentors for our pre-K and elementary students, morning song leaders, choir leaders, altar servers, and lectors for weekly mass. They develop skills as Christian leaders through daily religion classes, where they may develop, plan and implement projects of participation of the whole school and sometimes the greater community.
Our students are challenged to become responsible and contributing citizens in this increasingly complex and diverse world. Students attend Forest Glen Christian camp for four days every Fall where they study outdoor education. Christian counselors facilitate team building games, bible study devotionals, high and low ropes courses as well as archery, rifles, ping pong, basketball, soccer, horse shoes, fishing, owl pellets, tree and microscope study. There is also a special junior high retreat in the spring.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in Student Council, and in 7th grade may qualify for induction into the National Junior Honor Society. They plan three annual dances at the school and other social activities such as movie night and ice cream socials throughout the year for students 6th through 8th. Student Council and NJHS coordinate the schoolwide events and service projects such as junior high gardening day and Red Ribbon Week. One highlight of the Lenten season is to see this group act out the Stations of the Cross.
Our Jr. High students may participate in a number of extracurricular activities. Our sports program includes volleyball and basketball. In addition to our sports activities, we offer many electives at OLQP, such as choir, music, Speech Communications and Spanish. Guitar lessons are available before school on Wed (beginners) and Thursday (intermediate) mornings. In computer class, the students expand the computer skills taught in the elementary program. They are taught word processing, graphs and tables, Microsoft Excel, and Power Point presentations. Through cross-curriculum projects they also develop and use research skills on the internet.
Perhaps the greatest advantage of our Jr. High program is the quality of the atmosphere and expectation that promotes Catholic Christian development, responsibility, and accountability for young people who are faced with a world of conflicting morals and values. |
